For every student
there is a significant difference between the demands of GCSE and A
Level courses. This is recognised in our Sixth Form which
provides a unique national resource specialising in supporting those
with specific learning difficulties through individual post-16
programmes.
Each student is also
assessed and any extra help that is needed with life skills to enable
him to confidently enter university or other training is built into his
programme. This may be money management, assembly of flat pack furniture
or basic cooking.
Those taking A
Levels are asked to choose three from a list of thirteen. The students are each
given five hours contact time with the subject teacher and five hours of
supervised study. All the teaching groups are small, usually no more
than five students. The work is given in manageable pieces and
appropriate study skills are built into the programme.
Some £1 million has
been spent in developing the Sixth Form Centre with its residential and
tutorial space. Social needs are not forgotten and strong links have
been formed with local girls’ schools who join with our students for
balls/discos and other social activities. Sixth formers do not wear
uniform but have their own dress code. They are given responsibility and
hold school offices and support staff and junior boys.
For
some boys A Levels are not the most suitable route and other courses are
arranged for them.
