For every student
there is a significant difference between the demands of GCSE and A
Level courses. This is recognised in our Sixth Form which
provides a unique national resource specialising in supporting those
with specific learning difficulties through individual post-16
programmes.
Each student is also
assessed and any extra help that is needed with life skills to enable
him to confidently enter university or other training is built into his
programme. This may be money management, assembly of flat pack furniture
or basic cooking.
Our students study three or four A
levels from a list of nineteen subjects. All teaching groups are
small, rarely more than five students. The work is supported by
specialised courses exploiting each student's learning style, and
independent learning sessions are gradually introduced as the student
develops the necessary skills.
Some £1 million has
been spent in developing the Sixth Form Centre with its residential and
tutorial space. Social needs are not forgotten and strong links have
been formed with local girls’ schools who join with our students for
balls/discos and other social activities. Sixth formers do not wear
uniform but have their own dress code. They are given responsibility and
hold school offices and support staff and junior boys.
