We offer a wide and varied curriculum
which was highly praised by Ofsted. In the junior classes there is a
great emphasis on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science.
However, we need to build on each child’s strengths as well as
compensating for any weakness, so the Humanities, RE, Art, 3D and 2D,
Technology, Drama and Music are all in the weekly programme. Sport and
PE lessons target team building and confidence as well as the specific
demands of particular sports. Particular programmes help to improve
gross motor skills.
In year 9 (age 14), all of the possible
GCSE subjects are taught on a termly carousel so that boys may make
informed choices of their GCSE options. We currently offer 15 subjects
in addition to the core subjects.
For the GCSE years, boys may study English Language and English
Literature, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, or Double Award
Science, and a further three subjects of their choice. Some boys may
also do short courses – worth 0.5 of a GCSE- in PE, RE or Preparation
for Working Life.
Boys who do not take a GCSE in ICT will take the "European Computer
Driving Licence” (ECDL).

In our Sixth Form,
most boys study three A Levels chosen from a group of 13. Some boys will
take some extra GCSEs. All will take a specific life skills course that
will include banking and other financial matters, assembling “flat-pack
furniture” and a pre-driving course.
On Fridays, we run the “Flexi-Friday”
programme which targets one subject only for the whole day on a rota, so
that the core subjects are visited 2 or 3 times a term, the other
subjects once a term. This allows for cross-curricular teaching and
greater breadth and relevance to be brought to the curriculum.
As many boys also
need to be helped individually in the Learning Development Centre, each
boy in the school is on his own timetable.
